The Marisco Road

Nestled on a remote island and days away by boat from any other town, Puerto Eden is the most isolated village in Chile. For thousands of years, indigenous Kaweskar subsisted by diving for shellfish in the surrounding fjords, a tradition which survives today with artisanal shellfish divers.

Now, shifting ecological baselines due to climate change have brought more frequent and intense red tides. The biotoxins naturally present in these Harmful Algae Blooms, or HABs, become concentrated in the tissues of local clams, mussels and crabs, making local livelihoods both dangerous and unprofitable.
